
…at least when I was working in big search. The money was good, the offices were slick (sort of), and the politics were unbearable. Ability mattered less than seniority, and success was measured in PowerPoint slides and empty equity promises.
I remember watching an “ex-industry” partner spout corporate drivel to a client while delivering nothing. The title and the brand bought them time, but you could see the client was done. Meanwhile, the more searches I filled quietly and without drama, the worse those types of partners looked. That was the moment I realised competence doesn’t rise to the top in big search.
I built Greenway Collins because I’d had enough of it. Too much talk, not enough delivery. Firms winning retained business on credentials and buzzwords, then ghosting clients once the ink dried. This business, my business, runs on the opposite principle: understand the brief, manage expectations, and deliver what I say I will. My word is my bond.
I don’t touch small local roles or box-ticking hires. If you’re recruiting a junior, post an advert or speak to a fresh graduate recruiter wearing a headset. I focus on the searches that actually matter, where judgement, speed, and trust decide the outcome.
